The shadow cast- Culloden…

Ali phoned to tell me to watch this documentary tonight…

culloden

It is remarkably effective- telling the story of the fool-french prince, who thought he could take back the English throne by divine right, and by the blood of Highlanders.

And of the last land battle fought on British soil, in 1746, on a field near Inverness called Culloden.

The film tells of Highland brothers fighting on opposing sides, of how more Scots fought against the young Prince than with him, and of the terrible aftermath…

Well worth watching again- in case the version of Scottish History you subscribe to needs a to connect with the messy reality.

You can watch it again via the BBC i-player here.

  1. Oh dear. What do you mean by ‘British soil’ and ‘battle’?
What about 1798 Castlebar in County Mayo which was most definitely on British soil, was a “pitched battle” between a British army and a French army with Irishmen on both sides and was recognised as such by Lord Cornwallis, General Gerard Lake and the French General Humbert. Perhaps its absence from many histories could be that it was such an embarrassing defeat for the British.
Then there’s the Easter rising in Dublin, and what about the Battle of Britain – absence of soil there!
Closer to home (yours) have a look at Braes in Skye – more of a rebellion.
But more up to date would be the battles my sister has with my dad.

    • Fair enough Simon, you bloodhound you…

I meant to say UK mainland rather than Britain!

Braes in Skye was not a pitched battle, and as you rightly say, the Battle of Britain was not on the soil.

As for your Dad and Sister- I suggest a meeting on Culloden fields- they are not that far away after all!

  2. wow simon!
yeh what is not made public knowledge by the victors is sometimes the most revealing. This programme is from 64 and it would be nice to see it updated, but without the braveheart spin
