Dawkins and Fraser go at it on the wireless…

Great little exchange on Radio 4 this morning between Richard Dawkins, Athiest missionary, and Giles Fraser. I may be slightly biased but if we were to use a tiddlywinks analogy, Fraser’s winks were more numerous in the pot.

I tried to rise above it all but that line from Fraser where he asks Dawkins to name the full title of ‘The Origin of Species’ (which he couldn’t) made me laugh out loud.

Consider this post a slightly guilty admission that if I turn the other cheek, it is whilst smirking.

You can listen again here.

  1. Very funny clip but sobering to hear how (as on Newsnight 22.30 BBC 2) his efforts to discount religion verge on obsessive. So he’s an atheist, get on with it and let those who have faith get on with it too. So, there are bishops in the House of Lords, why should they be sidelined? Why are Christians not standing up for themselves here…when Muslims are sidelined because of the suspicion of militant activity they are not afraid to stand up for their rights..but Christians are being constantly criticised by Dawkins and his ‘posse’ with hardly a murmer. Isn’t there some law about racism/sidelining religion? Obviously doesn’t apply to Christians, rotten eggs welcome here…I know we are supposed to turn the cheek but it would be good if faith were actually encouraged in this country, as being equal to anything else, instead of being forever put down.

Because memorizing a book title somehow makes one right or wrong about science?

    • No more than memorising the books of the Bible makes you right or wrong about faith (which was the point that Fraser made rather well I thought!)

I suspect you are coming at this from a slightly different point of view, which I welcome. I was being a little cheeky about Dawkins more because I do not like blinkered fundamentalism, particularly those that I know best- the Christian ones. However Dawkins reminds me of some of the those!

Faith is not the opposite of science. I am weary of those who try to make it so.
